‘Mrs Rudd, the mother of Mrs Smart who had the shoe shop, ran it, she had everything including toys. You went in through the front door and there was a trap door just to the right, behind the counter. She used to open up this trap door and go down the steps into the cellar, which was an Aladdins cave. She used to dress up as Santa Claus at Christmas and as kids we couldn’t wait to get into that cellar’.
